Action Day (Part 2)
3rd, 4th and 5th Classes took part in their bicycle training sessions on Wednesday, May 31st. The weather was good and everyone had a great time. Mieke was very impressed with the children. Thanks to all the boys and girls who dressed up in traffic light colours of green, yellow/orange and red. The class teachers factored in an outside activity in the day so all children had a chance to be involved. Again, a big thank you to parents who organised transportation of the bikes to school so children could participate.

Action Day (Part 1)
On Friday, May 19th, the junior end of the school participated in bicycle training sessions with Travel Officer, Mieke Scholte as part of our Action Day (a requirement for the Green Flag award). Junior and Senior Infants, First and Second Classes were invited to bring their bicycles and helmets to school. Mieke took them through a series of cycling manoeuvres on the school yard spending 45 minutes with each class. The children practised safe braking, cycling between cones and other very useful activities finishing up their session with a slow bicycle race. We had a fantastic turnout with a huge number of children bringing bicycles and luckily the rain stayed away until everyone had finished! Unfortunately not everyone could bring a bicycle so the Committee made sure they were not left out. Each class came to the hall for a fun 'Station Session' where they had fun with hoola hoops, target practice with beanbags and four other activities organised by members of the Committee. The session ended with a dance. Everyone had great fun. The Committee would like to thank our parents for organising transport of the bicycles to and from school - we appreciate your involvement and effort very much.

National Walk to School Day 2017
On Wednesday, May 17th we participated in the Green Schools WOW Day. Green Schools Ireland wanted to encourage as many children as possible to walk to school on that day and we were delighted to join in. It was a beautiful bright sunny morning as we gathered in the Church car park and we walked a lap of the GAA field on our way to school. Molly blew the whistle to set us on our way and Eva and Sam were in charge of the count. We had a fantastic turn-out with parents, grandparents and child-minders joining us. We counted 188 students, 20 small children and 40 adults taking part. We will now forward these figures to the Green Schools Travel team to be included in the national count. Thank to everyone who joined in with special thanks to our parents for their support. Well done everybody!

We had an amazing 191 students and 57 adults join us!!
It was great fun! Thanks to everyone who joined in.
Thanks to Caoimhe who sounded the hooter to start us off and to Sam and Rónan who did the counting for us.

National Walk To School Day 2016
On Wednesday, May 18th, we participated in the National WOW Day. The Green Schools Travel Team at An Taisce in Dublin were hoping to reach a target of 20,000 children walking to school on that morning and we decided to join the challenge. The Committee invited all children in the school to meet in the car park to set off on the walk at 9.00am. The roads around the school are not safe for walking so we walked to school via the GAA field instead. Pupils, teachers, parents, grandparents and guardians gathered from 8.45am and Senan sounded the hooter to start the walk. Saoirse, Katie and Rachel directed the walkers at the GAA field and Emma and James kept a count of the walkers as they passed through the gate into the school yard. The response was phenomenal - 217 pupils turned out to walk! We will send our numbers to the Travel Team so we can be included in their count. Thank you to all the adults who joined us.
A huge thank you to the staff who supervised in the car park, along the walk route and in the school yard keeping everyone safe.
Work in Progress
This year, we are beginning work on our fourth green flag. This flag is for travel. We plan to encourage the school community to use sustainable modes of travel, raise awareness of the problems associated with using unsustainable modes of travel and investigate the travel patterns within our school with a view to making improvements if we can.
Slogan Competition
We are currently running a competition to find the best slogan. All students are invited to enter as many times as they like. We would like the slogan to be short and easy to remember. Entry box is on the corridor opposite the office.
Closing date for entries is Wednesday, March 16th.
Walkability Audit
On Wednesday, March 9th, Mieke Scholte from An Taisce joined the committee to investigate the possibilities for change in our school. We walked from the school up to the Community Centre and back through the GAA field to see if we could reduce our carbon footprint.y Our options are limited because of safety and feasibility but we'll do our best. Now we will wait to receive Mieke's report before we can proceed further.
