Run around EUROPE challenge!!
As part of working towards our Active School Renewal Flag, we took part in a Running Challenge for 4 weeks. During this time, we built a running break into every day. It was an excellent way for children to learn about the capital cities and most famous landmarks of Europe. It was also an excellent way for bringing learning outdoors. Class teachers were given:
- A Class Challenge Chart: for display inside the classroom where you tick off each landmark as you run to it. There’s also a map of Europe on the back.
- A laminated Progress Chart: for display outside the classroom where you can record your progress daily and weekly. This initiative took place from 26th Feb- 22nd March.
- At break time each day, all classes ran, jogged and walked for 10-15 minutes. The aim was to try and run to as many European capitals as possible. 1 lap= 1 km and each class level completed laps of different length. For every lap competed, children received a lollipop stick and these were gathered and counted daily by the class leaders who were in charge of filling in the total number of laps on their class' chart.
- We also choose to focus on the strand of Athletics in PE while taking part in this challenge.
- It was amazing to see some of the classes getting very competitive and even running/jogging and walking laps at various times throughout the day!!
How we got on in the challenge! |
Every class loved the challenge. Everyone made a special effort to run around the school yard or GAA pitch at lunch time or during PE lessons. We loved seeing how far we travelled on the map of Europe. Each Friday there were two people picked from each class and commended for the super effort they made to improve their running over the week. Check us out below!
